Tyre, Phoenicia, 80 - 79 B.C.
|Phoenicia|, |Tyre,| |Phoenicia,| |80| |-| |79| |B.C.|, Certificate of Authenticity issued by David R. Sear.

Half Shekel - the currency of the Jerusalem Temple
This coin and Forum's coin number 10737 share the same obverse die, which is particularly remarkable because they were struck 16 years apart. Mr. Sear commented, "The die-identity provides interesting evidence of the length of time that an anvil die could remain in use. Sixteen years does seem a remarkably long time, but one has to bear in mind that 1/2 shekels were produced in very small quantities compared with the larger denomination and were certainly not issued every year. Under these circumstances as long as an obverse die remained serviceable there is no reason why it should have been discarded."
SH10741. Silver half shekel, BMC Phoenicia p. 251, 226; Cohen DCA 921-47 (S); HGC 10 358; Baramki AUB -, F/gF, Phoenicia, Tyre (Lebanon) mint, weight 6.92g, maximum diameter 22.3mm, die axis 0o, 80 - 79 B.C.; obverse laureate head of Melqart right, lion's skin knotted around neck ; reverse TYPOY IEPAΣ KAI AΣYΛOY (of Tyre the holy and inviolable), eagle standing left, head left, wings closed, right talon on war galley ram, palm frond transverse right behind, date ZM (year 47) over club left, Δ right, Phoenician beth between legs; conservatively graded by Mr. Sear, who notes struck with damaged obverse die (but still "serviceable" after 16 years of use); scarce year; SOLD
