Florian, June or July - August or September 276 A.D.

Florianus, the half brother of Tacitus, was proclaimed emperor in the Western provinces after the latter's death. In the East Probus was declared emperor and the two marched against each other. Before a decisive battle could take place, Florian was murdered by his own soldiers. He "wore the purple" for less than 3 months.

|Florianus|, |Florianus,| |June| |or| |July| |-| |August| |or| |September| |276| |A.D.||antoninianus|
Florian's harmony with the military would not last, his officers murdered him after a reign of less than three months.
SH71637. Silvered antoninianus, MER-RIC 4293; Alföldi 1940, 2,2, Venèra II 2734; BnF XII 1950; RIC V-1 57 var. (officina, Ticinum); Cohen VI 11; SRCV III 11851, Choice EF, near full silvering, some porosity, weight 3.658 g, maximum diameter 21.8 mm, die axis 135o, Siscia (Sisak, Croatia) mint, Jul - Aug 276; obverse IMP C M AN FLORIANVS P AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right; reverse CONCORD MILIT (harmony with the soldiers), Florian togate standing right, clasping the hand of Concordia standing left, S in exergue; officina not in RIC; SOLD

|Florianus|, |Florianus,| |June| |or| |July| |-| |August| |or| |September| |276| |A.D.||antoninianus|
An ironic reverse since, instead of offering fidelity, his army murdered him after a reign of less than three months.
SH35067. Billon antoninianus, MER-RIC T4234, RIC V-1 30, Venèra 2563 - 2570, BnF XII 1911, Hunter IV 3, Gloucester 804, SRCV III 11857, Choice EF, bold with excellent centering and nice patina, weight 4.476 g, maximum diameter 22.6 mm, die axis 0o, 5th officina, Rome mint, 1st emission, Jul-Aug 276 A.D.; obverse IMP C FLORIANVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind; reverse FIDES MILIT (the loyalty of the soldiers), Fides standing half-left, long scepter vertical in right hand, transverse trophy in left hand, XXIE in exergue; from the Scott Collection; rare; SOLD

|Florianus|, |Florianus,| |June| |or| |July| |-| |August| |or| |September| |276| |A.D.||antoninianus|
This type is missing from most major collections and references. MER-RIC lists only three specimens (we submitted this one, so it should soon be the fourth). BnF XII lists it on p. 408 and includes a photo in the plates, but it is a Vienna specimen, not their own. The Vienna coin is not listed in MIR-RIC, making five known. We did not find any other specimens online.
RA84943. Billon antoninianus, MER-RIC T4476 (3 spec.), BnF XII -, p. 408, pl. 100, 550 (not in the BnF collection, photograph of Vienna specimen), Zanchi -, otherwise unpublished, Choice gVF, well centered, near full silvering, some light corrosion, weight 3.538 g, maximum diameter 23.3 mm, die axis 180o, 2nd officina, Serdica (Sofia, Bulgaria) mint, issue 1, Jul 276 A.D.; obverse IMP C M ANN FLORIANVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right, from the front; reverse VICTORIA PERPETVA AVG, Victory standing right, raising wreath in right hand, palm frond in left hand against left shoulder, facing Florian standing left, wearing military garb, right hand outstretched, long scepter vertical in left hand, star below center, KAB in exergue; ex Numismatik Naumann auction 45 (3 Jul 2016), lot 850; extremely rare; SOLD
