Comments: This is one of my favorite coins. It is not high grade, neither the obverse nor the reverse is well centered. The dioscuri are really just blobs, and this coin would be overlooked in any sale but the NAC 61 sale of RBW’s finest and rarest coins, perhaps the greatest Roman Republican auction of our generation. Nevertheless, the coin has a lovely tone and a style that is very characteristic of this issue which is quite rare.

Unique to this variety and the related staff issue, are the braided locks extending from the helmet to the hair binding. The stars are simple dots above the dioscuri, and ROMA is cut into the die with very large letters with a very fine line tool. There has been much speculation on the significance of the “C” insignia, but few with any real merit.

Comments:
This type with a “C” symbol is of the same fundamental style as the staff symbol 106/3c. presumably both issues from the same mint. The type is somewhat scarce, but the most common of the three other “C” sub-varieties.
Near complete on a large flan, GVF.

This medal is arguably the most complex architectural medal ever undertaken, and in my opinion the most accomplished. The depth of view is truly astounding, though this does not come accross to well in the picture. The depiction of the buildings is used as the cover art of Taylor's "The Architectural Medal: England in the Nineteenth Century", British Museum Publication, 1978.

Comments: Group 4 flag cape and small stars (later variation of group 4). This is one of the coins that spans the Group 4-Group 5 boundary. The obverse style is very close to the prototypical group 5 with a charming, almost “elfin” face, but the frame on the reverse is a close rectangle rather than a long exergual frame. This is an anonymous sibling to RRC 88/2, the spear head symbol series. Reverse slightly off-center, otherwise GEF.

Coins of Edward V are so rare as to be virtually non-existent. So in place of a coin of Edward V, I have a medal with his portrait. It is not contemporary with Edward V - that is, 15th century - but neither is it modern.

In 1731, Jean Dassier of Geneva, Switzerland, made a series of 34 medals showing the Kings and Queens of England. Dassier was an important European medalist, and this series is one of his most important. This series of medals was begun during his second stay in London, and was approved by Queen Caroline.

Eventually the dies for the medals came into the possession of Sir Edward Thomason, and he re-issued the medals around 1820. This medal of Edward V is from Thomason's re-issued series. Callimachus

Aurelian Antoninianus CoinThis type refers to Aurelian's defeat of Zenobia's Palmyrene Empire in the east. The captives wear Parthian caps and are typically attributed as Persians. The real captives were more likely Palmyreans. Typical of Roman propaganda, Zenobia's Sasanian supporters are depicted to glorify Aurelian's victory and mask that this was an internal revolt and civil war.

The second variety has Roma’s helmet visor of three long lines and of somewhat more elegant style, and is found with and without the curl and fillet. The present coin is the second style with the long visor.

This sub variety is the scarcest of the four sub-varieties of Cr. 76/1. Slightly off-center, obscuring part of the branch and the stars above the dioscuri on the reverse. otherwise, beautiful old toning and GVF.

In addition to official coinage, China also has a long history of producing "coin-like" charms, amulets and talismans.

Coins, as a form of money, represent power. Coin-shaped charms are, therefore, a very compact form of power. They are filled with symbolism and are believed by the multitude of Chinese to have vast powers.

Cast throughout the centuries, these ancient charms, informally referred to by the Chinese as "ya sheng coins" (压胜钱), "flower coins" (huaqian 花钱) or "play coins" (wanqian 玩钱), were not used as money but rather to suppress evil spirits, bring "good luck", "good fortune" and to avert misfortune.

For the most part, all these old charms,...were privately cast and their quantities and dates are almost impossible to determine. Nevertheless, they serve as important cultural artifacts from the life of the common Chinese throughout the centuries.

Emperor Shizong did cast coins in earnest beginning in 955 AD, the second year of his Xiande (显德) reign, with the inscription zhou yuan tong bao (周元通宝). To obtain the copper to make the coins, Emperor Shizong ordered the confiscation of bronze statues from 3,336 Buddhist temples. He also mandated that citizens turn in to the government all bronze utensils with the exception of bronze mirrors.

Zhou yuan tong bao coins are very well made and still exist in large quantities. Because the coins were made from Buddhist statues, they are considered to have special powers. For example, it was believed that the zhou yuan tong bao coin could cure malaria and help women going through a difficult labor.

Because of the common belief that the coin has special powers, the zhou yuan tong bao became very popular as the basis for charms and amulets. There are many charms with the inscription zhou yuan tong bao on the obverse and a dragon and phoenix on the reverse. Images of the Buddha, zodiac animals, and other auspicious objects can also be found on the reverse sides of zhou yuan tong bao charms.

The theme of this charm is "Zhou Chu killing the dragon".

A folk story about Zhou Chu appeared in the 430AD book "A New Account of the Tales of the World" and proved to be very popular. The story claims that Zhou Chu was such a hot-headed bully in his younger days that he was called one of the "Three Scourges" by the villagers in his hometown (in today's Yixing), along with a dragon and a tiger. Upon hearing the term, Zhou Chu went on to kill the tiger and the dragon. After he and the dragon disappeared for 3 days fighting in Lake Tai, the villagers celebrated wildly, just when Zhou Chu returned with the dragon's head. That was when he realized that he was the last scourge that the villagers feared. Determined to mend his old ways, he sought out Eastern Wu generals Lu Ji and Lu Yun, and received encouragement. Comments: The club issue is believed to be closely related by style to the fully anonymous RRC 53/2 group 4. In fact many coins of these two varieties are identical stylistically but for the symbol. It is now believed that all denari of this period of the II Punic war were struck in the war theater, probably in Apulia, rather than in Rome as Crawford suggested.

The reverse of this coin is slightly off-center and there is some indication of over striking, although it is so light the under-type is not discernable. Otherwise lovely iridescent toning, struck on a round flan and EF.
