Alexander Jannaeus Hendin 474Minted By: Alexander Jannaeus
In the name of: Alexander Jannaeus
Reference: Hendin 474
Obverse description: Within wreath, the Hebrew text “Jonathan the high priest and council of the Jews”
Obverse legend: Yehonatan HaKohen Gadol V'Ḥaver HaYehudim
Reverse description: Double cornucopiae, ribbons around, pomegranate between horns.
Year: Undated, between 103-76 BCE.
Its interesting that Gadol (high [priest], lit. "big") it spelled with a vav (GDOL), and not just GDL, like its commonly writen. Also, the vav in gadol usually occurs on prutot of Aristobulus.

Uncertain_MInt_6A_Hemidrachm_SC_70_1~0.jpg
GREEK, Seleukid Kingdom, Seleukos I Nikator, 312-281 BC, AR Hemidrachm - Babylonia, Uncertain Mint 6A Head of Herakles right wearing lion skin.
AΛΕΞANΔPOY Zeus Aetophoros seated left, inverted anchor to left, EP beneath throne.
SC 70.1; HGC 9, 42; Price 3442 (Marathus); Müller 1493; Houghton Group III, Series A, 127.
Issued by Seleukos in the name of Alexander from Babylonia Uncertain Mint 6A, 311-305 BC.
(13 mm, 2.15 g, 7h)

Judge this coin remembering it is a hemidrachm of 13 mm diameter. It does not possess the large palette of a tetradrachm!

This coin is the best of four known examples of this emission and the only one known outside of a museum. It is an obverse die match to an example from the Hersh Collection, now housed in in the British Museum (BM 2002,0101.796). The progression of the die break on Herakles neck indicates that this coin was struck after the Hersh coin.

Archaic Hebrew text within wreath: Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews / Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons and pomegranate between, Faded monogram to the bottom left. Hyrcanus I really put the Hasmonean country on the map by conquering so much land around, making Judaea the biggest it has ever been, larger then during the reign of King Solomon.

Ionia, uncertainPeríod of the Artemisión found.
Late 7th century BC.
Electrum 1/24 Stater - 0.49g
Obv.: Convex globular surface.
Rev.: Rectangular incuse punch.

Other than the literary tradition ascribing the origin of coinage to the kings of Lydia, there is little evidence for a more exact chronology of early Greek coinage. The tradition, buttressed by limited archaeological studies, does confirm Asia Minor as the place of origin, most likely Lydia or Ionia, and a date somewhere around 650 BC. The alloy used, a mixture of gold and silver known to the Greeks as elektron was based on the natural ore found in nugget form in many river-beds in the region. The earliest coins were of a globular shape and without design in imitation of this natural form; later, simple striated and punched patterns of squares, rectangles and swastikas were included.

Lydia, Uncertain Mint, 4th Century BC, Æ 11Head of Dionysos wreathed with ivy left.
Kantharos, between two letters 8-Æ· (largely off-flan) being F (in Lydian) and S (in Lydian).

Unpublished in the standard references, c.f. CNG 100 (7 Oct. 2015) Lot 1487; Vögtli, Pergamon 524; CNG eAuction 248, lot 119 (Syros).

(11 mm, 1.456 g, 10h).
ex- Forum Ancient Coins.

This coin was acquired with an attribution "unknown". Subsequently, CNG and others attributed the type to the Cycladic islands, either Syros, or Naxos Some years later this was corrected by CNG to an uncertain Lydian mint, possibly Sardes.

CNG Auction 100 note: "In previous sales, this issue has been variously attributed to either Cycladic Naxos or Syros. While both cities struck coins with the same types as on this issue, all of these cities’ bronzes consistently bear the first two letters of their respective ethnic flanking the base of the kantharos. On this issue, however, these Greek letters have been replaced by two Lydian letters, allowing its correct attribution to a mint in Lydia. Sardes is a possibility, as it’s spelling in Lydian was Sfard."
