GALLIENVS AVG / AEQVITAS AVG antoninianus (close to 261-263 A.D.?) Obv.: [GA]LL[IENVS AVG], radiate cuirassed? bust of Gallienus right, both ribbons behind?
Rev.: [AE]QVIT[AS AVG], Aequitas, draped, standing left, holding libra (scales) in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand. Right field: S or Z?
d oval 16-18-mm, 1.83g, die axis 6h (coin alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy supposedly with some silver.
Authority and portrait: Gallienus (joint reign 253-, sole reign 260-268). Mint: Rome, less likely Mediolanum (Milan) or Asia (Antioch?).
AVG = Augustus. AEQVITAS AVG(usti)= the Equity (fair dealing) of the Emperor. The attributes – scales and horn of plenty – have obvious symbolical meaning, scales mean honest measure and cornucopia – bounty to be distributed. Cicero defined aequitas as "tripartite": the first, he said, pertained to the gods above (ad superos deos) and is equivalent to pietas, religious obligation; the second, to the Manes, the underworld spirits or spirits of the dead, and was sanctitas, that which is sacred; and the third pertaining to human beings (homines) was iustitia, "justice". Aequitas Augusti was one of the main qualities of the emperor, constantly emphasized by Roman propaganda.
RIC V-1 Rome 159; Goebl 499-500; Sear 10167 (most likely), or RIC V-1 Milan 464; Goebl 1082, or RIC V-1 Asia 627; Sear 10168.
ID notes: Obverse seems Gallienus just based on facial features, also there seem to be edges of two letters L visible in the legend consistent with the usual GALLIENVS AVG. The figure on reverse clearly has cornucopia and, with some effort, one can discern scales in the right hand. The remaining legend letters are difficult to read, but they seem to be consistent with …QVIT… Hence we arrive at Aequitas. The length of the legend based on available letters seems more consistent with the longer form, AEQVITAS, than with shorter AEQVIT. This type was minted in Rome and, later, in Mediolanum and Asia (possibly Antioch or Cyzicus). Since this our coin is small, it is more likely to be made in Rome, the style also seems to be similar to Roman. There may be a mark in right field, looking like S, this also points towards Rome or Mediolanum.
Roman type is mostly ~19-20mm, Asian consistently larger, ~20-21mm, a few available Mediolanum examples are both small (18mm) and large (21mm). There is the usual variation with regard to emperor's bust (bare or cuirassed) or just head. Asian mint usually has mintmark in exergue (SPQR or star) and/or star in left field. Roman mint often has VI in right field or, less frequently, S or Z (probably a form of stigma), both pointing to officina 6. Milan mint is also known to use S or Z in right field.Yurii P

The scales, that natural emblem of Equity, are used by Persius to express the decision of right and wrong - the cornucopiae signifies the good which results from examining into the real merits of causesberserker
