Diobol from Leukas, Akarnania.Leukas, Akarnania.
Diobol. Ca. 400 - 375.
Obv.: Protome of Pegasus with raised wings flying left., below Delta.
Rev.: Head of Aphrodite(?) left.
About very fine. Little roughness.
dies axis 45°.

Very rare.
This is one of my new favourite coins, a real small beauty. And my first one with a pedigree, although that is not saying much.

probusquadriga.jpg
Probus Quadriga A coin I wanted to have for some time - it is not rare, but this one ist in a nice condition. And I like the view of the quadriga! helcaraxeOct 15, 2007
probusgerm.jpg
Probus in GermaniaProbus, silvered antoninianus, 278/279 AD, Rome, 1st officina.
Obv.: PROBVS AVG; cuirassed bust right.
Rev.: VICTORIA GERM; two captives beneath tropy. In exergue: R (wreath?) A.

This coin, which is in a very nice condition, is a must for every collector of coins connected with Germany or the Germans. It illustrates the victory Probus achieved over the Germans in the late 270es.

Crispus, Follis
Superb EF! Nice silvering (seen better on original!)

I like this coin, because it shows you, how the coins used to come out of the mint. Would almost surpass any QC even today! Wouldn't say anything more against the late Roman empire. This coin shows both art and craftsmanship.

Obv.: IMP C M AVR PROBVS PF AVG, draped, cuirassed and radiate bust left. Holds sceptre with eagle in right hand. In ex.: XXIVI

Rev.: VIRTVS PROBI AVG; Virtus walking right, with spear and trophy.
RIC 810; Cohen 894; Sear 3378
about EF; nice silvering.

Interesting bust type. Bytheway, Probus was the first guy who started viniculture north of the alp. So because of him we do have our own wine in Germany. Great man! :-)

Julia Soaemias, Denar, 218-222Julia Soaemias, AR-Denar, 218-222; 2.78g; 20 mm.
Obv.: IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG; draped bust right.
Rev.: VENVS CAELESTIS; Venus with sceptre and apple sitting left, child at her feet.
RIC 243; Cohen 14; Sear 2171; BMC 55
about very fine, some roughness.

Although not a expremely well preserved coin, it is from one of the scarcer empresses, so that I am very happy to own this coin. The roughness ist somewhat overemphasized in the scan due to the light angle. Looks nicer in hand!

julianapostatastier.jpg
Julian II. Apostate, double maiorinaJulian II. Apostate,
Double maiorina, 361-363, HERACLA in ex., Heraclea, 1. Offizin, 8.52g, 30 mm.
Obv.: D N FL C L IVLIANVS P F AVG; bareheaded beardes bust right.
Rev.: SECVRITAS REI PVB; bull right, two stars above.
RIC 104; Sear 4072
good VF
nice black patina, some roughness in fields.

The bull on the reverse cannot be, as often assumed, the one of apis, as it is always depicted with the sun betwenn its horns and the crescent moon above. Probably the picture shows us Julians horoscope, but not as in Augustus' capricorn coins the horoscope of his birth, but his conception. The idea came probably from his religious advisor Maximus of Ephesus. It was interpreted as a fortunate sign for the upcoming war against the Persians. After his military debacle and his death Christian theologists and historians used this as an argument against fortune-telling and astrology.

Vologases III. 105 - 147 AD, AR drachmVologases III. 105 - 147 AD, AR drachm, 3.76 g; 21 mm.

Rv.: archer sitting right. Under the bow monogram (AΓT). Unreadable inscription in seven lines.
Sear (Greek Imperials) 5831; Sellwood 78.2; BMC 23. 186.66
about EF

Since Orodes II (ca. 57-38 BC) the revers inscription was taken over identically. The dies cutters' decreasing knowlege of Greek language led to increasingly blundered legends, until they were not eligible any more.
