Ancientdave Gallery Additions
« on: July 10, 2023, 10:02:41 pm »
Another new coin has been added to my gallery. I will continue to add coins here as I move through a significant backlog of additions. This one has a lovely portrait of Octavian and is much more scarce with head right than with head left. A cursory search of our Forum Galleries did not turn up another example, here. As always thank you for looking and commenting.

A few more additions to the gallery. First up is a lovely little As (or possibly Dupondius?) of Aelius Caesar. I have always been fascinated by Aelius, we know precious little about him and the events that led to his adoption by Hadrian, which was sadly for him quite short lived. We know he was distinguished and was the father of the later emperor Lucius Verus, and not much else. I have read he was known for his handsomeness (evident in the coins) and that it was rumored that Hadrian's interest in him may have been more aesthetic than administrative. I finally was able to find a nice portrait in bronze. This was a difficult coin to photograph, it is MUCH better in the hand.

Also added is a run of the mill Dupondius of Trajan with Felicitas reverse. This issue is notable for spelling out completely SPQR for it's reverse legend, which is pretty neat. As always, thank you in advance for looking and for your kind comments. It is so nice to be back in the swing of things and cataloging my growing collection with you here again!

Very nice patinas on those last three large AEs! That Aelius looks especially impressive. (I've got one or two of his middle AEs, seems like they tend to have pretty high relief portraits.) And, of course, that Octavian denarius is really something else, quite lovely.

Also don't try to convince me that the Empress-as-Fecunditas isn't actually holding a Lemur! (I could settle for Infant-as-Lemur, but that thing all but proves the Romans made it to Madagascar!)

Hahahahaha! That kid does look like a lemur. This could rewrite history, they must have made it to Madagascar. Somebody call Disney and Pixar, it's time for a reboot! Thank you Curtis for the kind and hilarious comments!

And lastly, a respectable dupondius of Marcus Aurelius. Thanks for looking and commenting. I'm having a blast finally getting into the backlog!

Antoninus Pius Pergamon & Philippopolis Coins Added
« Reply #13 on: July 29, 2023, 03:11:10 pm »
I have added a couple of small provincials of Antoninus Pius, with excellent portrait styles, on par with that of Rome herself. I have long been fascinated with provincial Roman coins that have Imperial level style portraits. I also love fractional denominations, and while they do exist, portrait semis of Antoninus Pius are exceedingly rare, you almost never see them. So for me these little provincials sort of fill that slot, so to speak. I hope you enjoy them, and thanks for looking and commenting.

Marcus Aurelius Dupondius and As Added
« Reply #14 on: August 07, 2023, 06:59:37 pm »
I have added two more coins. This time two lovely and interesting coins of Marcus Aurelius, one As and one Dupondius. The As has the interesting and scarce river god Tiber reverse, and the dupondius has the quite scarce Mercury reverse, which I believe refers to the famous rain miracle, based upon the RELIG legend and references I have read about the series. Mercury seems to for some reason be a very rarely seen reverse type on Imperial coins. I don't know of another outside of Marcus Aurelius with the RELIG reverse legend. I hope you will enjoy them, and as always thank you for looking and commenting.

Hello again all, I have added 3 new coins to the gallery, two Imperial Bronzes and a Denarius. First is a nice Sestertius of Lucius Verus with a great portrait and bust type, and I also enjoy how you can recognize both Lucius and Marcus on the reverse. Second is an As of Nerva with a nice looking portrait. Last is a Denarius of Antoninus Pius with a neat Temple Of Augustus reverse. Thanks for looking!

3 More Imperial Bronzes Added
« Reply #23 on: September 14, 2023, 02:12:34 pm »
Hello friends, I have added 3 more nice coins to my gallery, and I wanted to share them with everyone. First is a nice Lugdunum mint As of Augustus with a well struck, stoic portrait and a pleasing patina. Second is a big Sestertius of Agrippina Sr. minted by Claudius, notable for having a fierce, well defined portrait and an enhancing mottled patina. Lastly is an early As of Titus as Caesar from 72 AD, with a most jolly, smirking portrait. I hope you enjoy seeing them, and as always thanks in advance for looking and commenting.

Hello again, friends. I have added 5 more Imperial Bronzes to my gallery. 3 Bronzes of Trajan, a rare Eastern semis of Vespasian issued late in his Reign, part of a little understood issue. There is also an As of Domitian with an interesting Ludi Saeculares reverse. I hope you will enjoy seeing them, and thank you in advance for looking and commenting.
