Marc Antony portrait Denarius, 42 B.C., Sol
« on: October 10, 2009, 02:18:07 am »
Ok, so it's not the greatest grade, but it looks ok in person and it was a relative bargain.  I don't collect Denarii much, as I prefer larger coins, but I enjoy Denarii of the Imperatorial period, and pick them up whenever opportunity arrives.

Mark Antony.
42 B.C. AR denarius (18 mm, 3.28 g, ).
Military mint traveling with Antony in Italy. Bare head of Mark Antony right, with beard; behind, lituus / Radiate head of Sol right.
Crawford 496/2; HCRI 127; Sydenham 1170; RSC 68. Fine, porous.
Recycled photo.

I also found a way to satisfy my Nero Sestertius fix, and the other coins were basically freebies, so I bought it in the same transaction.  Group lot.

Nevermind the grade, a Mark Antony denarius and a Nero sestertius are things to have, any grade.

Good catch

Thanks, Potator!

A long-time want has been a February 44 B.C. Caesar denarius.  I hope to fix that soon, too.

Those are definitely worthy coins to have...especially at the price you suggest you acquired them for!

Best, Noah

The Antony denarii of the early years have such a marked difference to the later ones where he resembled Clutch Cargo.  I kind of like the earlier ones better.

Thanks.  I noticed you're an Antony collector.  Sometime in the future, I'd like to pick up a VF or XF legionary type.  But first, I want to get a Caesar Dictator Perpetuo denarius.

I'd also like to pick up a decent Vienne Octavian and Divus Julius dupondius, with the galley reverse.

I have a few VF legionaries but by far most are VG or lower.  It's tough to get a really nice one unless your willing to pay, but a few times you get lucky.  Same goes for Antony portraits.  For right now I'm just trying to get one of each legionary type then I'll replace with better specimans.
