A new die combination for Severus (and a correction)

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 17, 3.27mm
obv. AV L CE - CEVHROC
       laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLI - PROC ICTRO
Asklepios with snake staff stg. frontal, head l.
ref. a) not in AMNG:
cf. AMNG I/1, 1382 (rev. only)
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015) No. 8.14.20.5:
          rev. No. 8.14.20.5
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.36.6 (same die)
Savoca Auction 8, Lot 276, April 2016

This type is known with 2 different obv. dies: AV L C and AV L CE. The central coin of 8.14.20.5 has AV L CE too. It is a rarer obv. die.

A correction for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 29, 12.03g, 29.27mm, 225°
struck under Pollenius Auspex
obv. AV KAI LOV CEPT.  - CEVHROC PER
       Laureate head r.
rev. VPA POL.AVCPEKO - C - NIKOPOLI PROC ICTRO
Tyche, in long garment and Mantle, wearing mural crown, stg. frontal, head l., holding in l.
arm cornucopiae and in extended r. and rudder
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015) No. 8.14.38 2 (same dies, but writes AV KAI L CEPT)
coll. Hoeft

This obv. die was used for a coin under Gentianus too, HrHJ (2015) 8.14.32.4 (AMNG 1266). Evidence that he was the successor of Auspex.

4 corrections for Asklepios

(1) #167 (coll. Scaevola) in this thread:
You can recognize Asklepios' nose and his eyes, making him depicted facing!
(2) Severus, HrHJ (2015) 8.14.20.2:
The depiction of this coin is very similar to that of #167 (coll. Scaevola). Asklepios is depicted
      stg. facing!
(3) Caracalla, HrHJ (2015) 8.18.21.3:
When I have this coin in hand a close look with a magnifier shows that the locks of Asklepios'
head hair can be seen on both sides of his head. That is the evidence that he is depicted
      facing.
(4) Caracalla, HrHJ (2015) 8.18.21.2:
This coin shows the same phenomenon like 8.18.21.3. Asklepios is depicted facing.

The description of all these 4 coins should be changed to "Asklepios stg. facing".

Thanks to Curtis Clay for his hints!

A variant for Antoninus Pius

Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161
AE 20, 4.36g, 210°
obv. AV T AI ADRIA - ANTWNEIN
       Bare head r.
rev. NEIKOPO - LEITWN
Artemis stg. r., bow in l. hand, with r. hand drawing arrow from quiver on shoulder
ref. a) AMNG I/1, 1222 var. (has ANTWNEINOC)
      b) Varbanov (engl.) 2118 corr. (writes "laureate head")
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015) No. 8.6.13.3 var.
Forum Ancient Coins, May 2015

We see that the listed rev. legend NEIKOPO - LIITWN was caused by a blocked die and that NEIKOPO - LEITWN is the original legend.

Regarding coin 184 (two posts above this), I would argue that the coin is H&J 8.104.1.30 var due to the globe.

Dear Tom!

I'm referring to Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2015). And here the type with "Eagle on globe" is 8.4.2.34

Best regards

I have modified Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov to use dashes instead of forward slash between the names. The forward slash cannot be used in auto links.
