1791 Liverpool Halfpenny token
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=187305The age of wooden sailing
ships reached its height under Great
Britain around the time this token was struck. The voyages of Captain
James Cook were only a couple decades past, and the thrill of new discoveries in the far-flung Pacific and South Sea islands continued to inspire other intrepid explorers. Just a couple years earlier, Captain William Bligh
had set sail in the
Bounty on
his ill-fated voyage to the breadfruit islands. With these voyages of discovery came proportionate leaps in scientific knowledge and advancement, under the brilliant leadership of
men like Joseph
Banks and later Alexander von Humboldt.
That this token pictures a ship under sail is a fitting tribute to the age, and the fact that it also happens to feature a beautiful deep sea-green
patina adds to the charm.
Thanks for looking!
