Crispus OTD

Hi,

I just saw the wonderful gold coin of Crispus on Forum's inventory - very nice!

Thought I'd post my own homage to Crispus, an Arles mint Follis from 317-8AD.

Obv: CRISPVS NOB CAES
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev: PRINCIPIA IVVENTVTIS
Mars standing left, holding vertical spear and leaning on shield
C/S//QARL
Arelate Mint
RIC (VII) Arles 143

The mark on the reverse from 9 to 11 o'clock is from the inappropriate use of tongs on the blank!

Regards,

Mauseus

Not to burst anyone bubble.............but RIC VII 143 of Crispus from Arles is NOT gold. And gold would not have any deposits on it either.

Er, I think if you re-read Mauseus' post Chip, you will find that he was refering to the gold coin which is for sale in FORVM's Catalog. The attribution is for his own coin which is pictured.  ::)

Sorry....  I see that now.

It was early and my eyes and/or my brain were/was not working properly yet I guess.

A wonderful piece.  Not only does the coin have nice coloration, but it also gives evidence of its ancient minting process.  Quite nice!

I think the missing metal on edge is just a chip, however; that piece hadn't properly fused with the rest of the flan so broke off when exposed to the pressure of striking or sometime thereafter.
