Coin of the Day - Caesarea Minima with Ibis and Crocodile
« on: March 10, 2024, 05:34:11 pm »
Hi all.  I have been adding some uncatalogued coins to my minima gallery and updating others.  I finally found a proper reference for this one and made new photographs.  I originally thought the reverse was a scorpion, but it is clearly a crocodile.  The Ibis facing left and walking is unusual.  This is an anonymous issue variously attributed to Augustus or Caligula, and could be a official issue of the Alexandria mint, or perhaps a local imitation from the mint at Caesarea based on its smaller size and weight.  There are a number of examples at Acsearch.info if you enter "ibis" and "crocodile", some lighter and some heavier.  The classic black and red Caesarea patina is quite striking.  Any other comments or information are always welcome.  Thanks a lot!  Jimi Berlin (V-drome)

Nice little coin! I like those small Alexandrian AE's, particularly that type with the crocodile.

Thank you, Jay and CPK.  Yes, I really like these little coins and they are in many ways still a great mystery.  Also, CPK, love your Rhino.  The 1st Century quadrans was a denomination almost never seen at Caesarea as far as I know, though coins from all over the Roman world were found there.

Best regards, Jimi
