Hamburger suggested a date
of early through late 3rd century CE
and assigned this type to the mint
at Caesarea, based on the high number
of specimens found there. However, a
number of other cities on the coast,
including Ascalon and Tyre, also used
this type in their official and semi-
autonomous coinage up until the early
2nd century. Any references to
recent studies would be appreciated.

This tiny coin may be an imitation or even an
official issue of a Late Roman type known for
Theodosius II and Valentinian III. Per Hamburger:
"In the IVth and Vth centuries Roman bronze
coinage becomes progressively smaller with the
passage of each decade, so that by the time of
Arcadius, Theodosius, Valentinian III etc. the
coins are reduced to 10 mm... Considering the
extremely small size of the regular coins, it is
remarkable that it has been possible to find any
of the still smaller minute coins of this period..."

This is another of the small denomination
coins, generally presumed to be official
issues of the mint at Alexandria, which
are very frequently found at Caesarea
alongside smaller, local imitations of the
same types. These coins are included in
our Minima Collection rather than the Roman
Greek Provincial gallery (BCC RGP) in order
to remain consistent with Hamburger's
catalogued collection, cited above.

Hamburger assigned this type to the mint
at Caesarea based on the frequency of finds
(125 pieces in his collection), as well as the
importance of the galley to the harbor of
Caesarea. He suggests a date spanning the
early to late 3rd century CE based on the
popularity of the bust of Tyche on colonial
coinage from that era. See: H. Hamburger,

This very tiny coin is similar to Hamburger #119
Atiqot English Series, Vol.1, 1954. “Minute Coins
from Caesarea Maritima”. Dr. Hamburger published
six coins with similar motifs. These coins bear either
a male or female head on the obverse, and anywhere
from 2-4 heads or busts, often crudely rendered,
on the reverse. He was unable to assign a date or
a place of minting based on the style of the designs,
and these coins remain a mystery.

Hamburger assigns this type to the mint at

suggest Caesarea was the mint, since they
seem to be most commonly found there.

AE10.5-12.0mm. 0.62-1.07gm. Axis: 90
Similar to Hamburger #6-26 “Minute Coins
from Caesarea Maritima” Vol.1 Atiqot,1954.
Hamburger assigns this type to the mint at
Tyre, in imitation of the well-known autono-
mous coins of that city from the late 1st and
early 2nd Cent. CE. However, other experts
suggest Caesarea was the mint, since they
seem to be commonly found there. Of note
is the 90 degree axis seen in the majority of
these Tyche/Palm Tree minimae.

apparently official issues from cities
around the eastern empire, were also
frequently found in the surrounding
sand dunes.

BCC M98-M102Caesarea Minimae
Five minute coins from Caesarea Maritima
Mint: Caesarea?
Obv:Head of Tyche, or female head,
often crudely rendered.
Rev: Various styles of galley.

M98: 13x11mm 0.79gm. Axis:300

(same reverse die?)
M101: 10mm 0.44gm Axis:210 cf. Ham# 66
M102: 10mm 0.55gm Axis:30 cf . Ham# 70

Hamburger assigned this type to the mint at
Caesarea because of the frequency of finds,
as well as the importance of the galley to the
harbor of Caesarea. He suggests a date of early
through late 3rd century CE based on the
popularity of the bust of Tyche on colonial
coinage from that era.
