Carausius ant with legend error
« on: September 22, 2006, 03:59:50 am »
Hi all

I recieved this Carausius antoninianius in the mail today :

IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG, radiate bust right, draped and cuirassed seen from front.
MONITA AVG (sic), Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia
It's 22 mm and 3,64 gr

Thanks to Mauseus, The Carausius expert, who noticed the I instead of E on the reverse legend.

Now the problem is that Cohen has 2 references with MONITA, but the oberse legends are :
# 178 : IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVGG
# 179 : IMP C M CARAVSIVS P F AVG

Maybe RIC gives a solution ??

Regards
Potator

Hi,

A lovely specimen too!

RIC extract below. I would classify it as unmarked official mint, RIC - (cf 855, 866). The Cohen specimen with AVGG looks to be RIC 866.

Regards,

Mauseus
