Fragment of Roman military diploma ?
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:32:43 pm »
Long time ago I had to sell my small fragment of roman military diploma , that I bought from the reputable coin dealer . I regret my decision and since was looking for any fragment , but it's almost impossible to find them for sale . Finally got it . But not really sure in authenticity . Any opinions .
14 - 17mm, 0.97 grams

It looks pretty good to me.  The lettering on the second photo is very typical of the "reverse" lettering.  The lettering on the first photo is a bit harder to interpret.  I can see the colour difference but can't actually tell how the letters are cut.  Maybe another photo with the light at an angle that shows the depth of the letters?

So far all the fake diplomas I have seen have been either complete or very large (i.e. 3/4 of 1/2) "fragments".  Many are just total crap.  But even the few with half-decent lettering don't have convincing patinas.  But I am sure that will all change one day.  Maybe once everyone learns you can't get a whole diploma for $100-200 the crooks will start faking smaller fragments.

Great.  Yes, it definitely looks genuine to me.

Attached are images of mine.  You can see that the style is very similar.

Vlad,

Not sure whether Eastern Austria or Serbia.

It is interesting that most diploma are found as small bits.  They seem to be parts of bronze scrap hoards meaning they were sold or traded to scrap dealers at some point and broken up.
