Vespasian Vesta Reverse
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:26:34 am »
I recently acquired a denarius of Vespasian.  It has the Vesta reverse with Vesta holding a staff and simplicum.  There are two examples on Wildwinds.  One an Antioch mint is much rarer than the other more common. They seem either  identical or with a COS III or IIII difference.   The attribution states in essence that the Antioch mint is a die match for a coin of the 1920's (meaning attributed then, I guess) that is attributed to the Antioch mint.  Is that the only difference?  Needless to say, mine is of  the more common variety.
Thanks.
Bruce

Apparently the Anticoch Mint example is unique and it is unlisted in the BMCRE. The coin can easily be identified from that mint style wise.

Antioch often shared the same reverse designs as Rome, the Vesta reverse is yet another example. Many of the same reverses minted in Anticoch at the time were minted in Rome, either in silver or gold, with basically no difference in their layout.

The Wildwinds coin Bruce refers to, CNG 61, 2002, 1689, is from the same obv. die as RPC II, 1929, an Antioch-mint denarius of Vespasian with a different rev. type.  1929 is the cat. number in RPC, not a date.
