Antony & Octavia tetradrachm!
« on: July 18, 2014, 08:15:27 pm »
Purchased this one online very cheaply as a run of the mill Nero As.  To me it looked like it might be a protocontorniate and when it arrived low and behold it was!  Very good portrait of Nero with almost all of the legends visible.  Difficult to photograph because it is on the rough side but it is much better in hand.  Even with the roughness it's a nice coin!

An extremely important Mark Antony denarius added today with Julius Caesar reverse.  Dual portrait.  Struck after the meeting at Bononia and the formation of the Second TriumvirateRare.  Not even close to a nice specimen but probably the best I will find for a long time:

and

A pre-Reform denarius of Nero, EX SC in wreath reverse:

Comments always welcome!

Thanks for the comments in the gallery guys. I haven't purchased anything in a while because I'm trying to focus on quality rather than just filling spots but with these two I just had to buy them.  About 6 years ago I was offered a very similar condition double portrait Antony/Caesar for about 6 times the price I paid for this one.  Actually it was pretty much thrown in with the Nero!  In hand you can just about make out some lettering on the Antony side

Two new photos of old coins.

and a very nice Antony togate with Sol:

Really nice toning on this one!

Nice augural coin with especially nice toning but Oops! You've transposed the obverse and reverse in the picture of the second coin. The usual numismatic convention is the side that shows the issuer, Mark Antony, and his name, which is usually considered the obverse, would be at left of the picture, whereas the side that shows some random deity and the concluding tail of his titles is usually considered the reverse and would be at right.

Hahaha  ;D I did it again!  The whole reason why I took the new picture was to change it the right way round!

Hi, Jay

I agree with the comments in your gallery : good portrait. I have the feeling, with this specific issue (the winged caduceus) that a lot of care/attention was put to the dies (usually good weight, well centered, strict but nice portrait, etc...) vs other issues from the Rome mint for this period.
Best

Thanks guys, I really do love the Domitian.  Such a nice big coin and portrait.  I'm having a tough time tracking down other examples with the P below the grain on the reverse.

nice additions Jay, and i especially like the Tarentine didrachm (of course!), which is a beautiful example.
i think it should be Vlasto 836 though. 834 has an inscription above the horses raised leg.

congratulations buddy,

The Domitian tetradrachm is truly an amazing work of art. It's new RIC 853 and only RPC is cited, so no help in tracking down other specimens of the type with a 'P' in exergue!

Thanks Peter and David for the attributions help.  I've updated to reflect the new numbers.  I take it the Domitian is rare?

I traded my Caracalla Circus Maximus TEMPORVM denarius for both the Calabrian Didrachm and the Domitian Tetradrachm.  While I loved the Caracalla coin for it's historical significance and rarity I really don't collect Severan's so these two coins fit in more closely to my interests....it was a tough decision though!

Yes, very much so with a 'P' in exergue. And apparently engraved from very fine dies too!

I can't get over how great looking this cistophorus is!

Thanks everyone!

Finally took a photo of a Tetrarch seal I got several months ago.  Great dolphin between the 4 busts of the Augustii and Ceasarii:

I wasn't happy with the photo of my Nero protocontorniate I  added a while back so here is a much better pic showing more of the detail.  Lighting makes a difference!

After many years of searching for a good example I finally got one!  Antony restitution denarius by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus:

Still trying to figure out the reason for this issue!  I'm not fully convinced of the theories proposed.

Jay,

A decent specimen, and certainly an interesting type to acquire.

The reason for the restoration is not in doubt in my opinion, having been discerned by Mommsen in 1859.

Because of their lower silver content, Antony's legionary denarii were excluded from Trajan's recoinage of 107, and therefore Trajan did not restore this type.

But by the reign of Marcus and Verus, the silver content of the current denarius had fallen to the point that it had now become profitable to recoin Antony's denarii. Marcus and Verus did so, and therefore restored the coin too, picking at random one of the commoner legions for their restoration, since it was quite unnecessary to restore coins for several different legions, or for all of them!
