On these coins you can clearly see the dot after VΠ. Therefore, the following letter cannot be the A to
complete VΠ to VΠA, which also occurs frequently. It is the abbreviation for the
praenomen of
Aurelius Gallus. It can be A or Λ which is often difficult to distinguish on coins.
Pick already recognised this problem. He was
still wavering between A for Aulus and Λ for
Lucius. According to Dilyana Botiva,
his name is L.
Aurelius Gallus, which speaks in favour of the prefix
Lucius. Wherever there is a full stop between VΠ and the next letter before AVP, this letter should be changed to Λ. L.
Aurelius Gallus was
legatus Augusti pro praetore under
Septimius Severus, Iulia
Domna,
Caracalla and
Geta. The name
Aurelius Gallus should be replaced everywhere by L.
Aurelius Gallus.
Best regards
