Ancient Roman Buttons
« on: May 26, 2010, 07:08:13 am »
Hello :)
Could anyone help me ID id these buttons?

They should be late roman buttons and the floreal design should be a representation of the Sol Invictus.

Regards
Nicola

Hello:

I am not an expert but long time ago I read that they probably are from 18-19th century.

   Greetings,

                                           Luis

Hi,

I am not an expert but long time ago I read that they probably are from 18-19th century.

I think Luis A. P has the answer, they look post mediaeval, particularly the second group. The first group could be earlier.

Mauseus

Hi,

There are plenty on the UK detector finds database, www.ukdfd.co.uk.

Here is an early 19th century button from that source:

You buttons look's like late medievil buttons, but of course they are not ancient and ROMAN.
Even old Slavonic button with enamel looks like these one:

Sold ad "lot of roman and mediaeval buttons", some of these buttons (from spain) are identical to mine.

I think it could be the proof that the fist group could be roman.

Spanish cast buttons late 18th early 19th century - the design is sometimes referred to as "sunburst"

the smaller ones are cuff link buttons - one of yours has the wire left that attached to the other button or stud

the one odd ball is probably older...up to a few hundred years earlier

I think the remainder are pewter
