"secvndo" in exergue. unknown
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:24:01 pm »
I have been unable to find any reference to this latin word on a coin.  This coin is 15 mm in dia.  looks like maybe a valentinian?  the reverse has victory advancing left with "reipvblicae" possible on the right side.   unable to read any letters on obverse.  Any help much appreciated

SECVNDO has to do with the second officina of a mint. I know examples from other (Valentinian I, Valens) coins with RSECVNDA (Rome Second Officina). From what I've read only the Rome mint produced coins with the officina number spelled in full. Why it is SECVNDO and not SECVNDA, I am not sure. Maybe a typo or I am missing knowledge on the coin types.
Your coin is a typical either Valentinia I, Valens or even Gratian (I am not that good to tell form the coins condition).

Rome was the only mint who used this arrangement in this period
