Not that it is a dreamy position, but if you had to be a Palace slave in Ancient Rome, under which emperor would you have preferred to serve? Were the best emperors necessarily the best masters?

Claudius, I guess, based solely on the fact that he is the only one I can think of who had such noteworthy freeman like Narcissus, Pallas, Callistus.  And I'd hope not to share the fate of Polybius.

I already am a slave. I am married ... with teenage children.  :(

Marcus Aurelius seemed like a nice enough bloke, although I might be unduly influenced by Alec Guinness' Marcus in The Fall of the Roman Empire.

She-Who-Thinks-She-Ought-To-Be-Obeyed seems to think I'm a slave already.

I think the no list is pretty scary: Elagabalus, not. aged Tiberius, not. Caracalla, not. "Little Boot", not. Commodus, not.
Put me down for Antoninus Pius.

I agree with Gavignano. Antoninus Pius seems like the best option.

My wife thinks you're a slave?

I'm just happy to see that so many people think of themselves as palace slaves in their own homes. I think the "palace" benefits seem to outweigh the "slave" part.

And by the way, I would have gone for Augustus, preferably in the last twenty years of his reign.

It sounds as though they're spiritual sisters.

If you're forced to be a slave (God forbid!), I don't think the emperor would have much to do with how you are treated.  That would depend, I think, on your immediate overseers.  George S.
