Rare Crispus
« on: March 13, 2024, 01:26:16 pm »
Hello, i have this coin. I found 4 copies on nummus bible II as this one: https://www.nummus-bible-database.com/monnaie-101417.htm. It is noted A in the left field but i see something like on the third photo. The mark seems RQ. REIPVBLICA or AE and with A in form of letter H. This coin seems very original to me, the rarity, the monogram on the left and the lettering.

A nice coin, Flav V. I agree with Victor, looks like a weakly struck A to me.

I think it is RIC 83 from the mint of Rome, year 317 (vol. VII, p. 307):

Bust B5 - "bust laur., cuir." (Vol. VII, p. 88)
Obverse Legend 5b - CRISPVS NOBIL CAES
Reverse: CLARITAS REIPVBLICAE. Breaks in the legend vary greatly.
Mint marks: RP, RS, RT, RQ,  with A in left field.

RIC rarity: R4.

For my money (pun intended), Crispus - and the reason for and exact circumstances of his death / execution - is one of the most interesting figures and stories of the later Roman Empire.

And, of course, Fausta brought new meaning to the term "spa weekend." (Sorry, I couldn't resist)
Best,
