Bronze Recumbent Lion
« on: March 03, 2023, 12:47:03 pm »
The information provided by the consignor is...ex Griffin Gallery of Ancient Art (Boca Raton FL); ex Sotheby's New York auction May 1997, lot 363.  I don't have the Sotheby's catalog and he did not provide any other details. I have no idea of the culture (though I know it came from Israel and I think it was made in somewhere between Egypt and Iran), and I do not know the date. Of course there are lots of bronze lions in references, but none I have found are this style. Any help

Definitely Near Eastern.  But whether late-Persian or Islamic I don't know.

Try searching Seljuk art.

Thanks Shawn.  I think I am going to have to buy the Sotheby's New York auction May 1997 catalog. I found a copy in Italy, unfortunately, it will cost a lot with shipping.
