Interesting imitative
« on: November 23, 2023, 05:37:13 pm »
Hello,

I show this Claudius II coin with PAX AVGVS reverse wich seems imitative. The obverse legend is unusual but the portraiture and pax are of good quality. What is your opinion? The coin weights 3.03 grs for 19.00 mm.

What makes you think it is imitative?

The lettering is clumsily arranged, but it was a big coinage perhaps hurriedly made.  The letters themselves look proper as does Pax.

But I am not an expert in this area and may be missing something.

The reverse legend is AVGVS so i think it is an error.. The lettering alone is not a problem but added to this error it make me think of an imitative

PAX AVGVS was common for Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian.  Not sure if it was found on any official issues for Claudius II.

The rest of the quality is so good that one wonders - imitation made by mint employees (but then why misspell the word) or poor engraving of official coin including not fitting in the last letter.

Do you confirm this reverse is unlisted?

Wow, very interesting Pekka. Thanks for the research. Not the same obverse, but definitely a reverse die match.

I have the confirmation that this coin is an imitative. And i search for the obverse die that we already saw somewhere.
