Die Axis on Marc Antony Legionaries
« on: April 12, 2023, 10:03:54 pm »

Following up on Din X’s observation about die axis on MALs in the Legion VIIII post under fakes, I checked each of mine and this was the distribution:

12:00– 2
 1:00– 4
 2:00– 2
 3:00– 2
 4:00– 1
 5:00– 6
 6:00– 16
 7:00– 7
 8:00– 2
 9:00– none
10:00– 4
11:00– 4

Of the 13 of the above which are NGC slabbed (roughly 25 percent of the total), the distribution was similar:

1:00– 1
2:00– 2
3:00– 1
5:00– 1
6:00– 3
7:00– 2
8:00– 1
11:00– 2

While clearly not a large enough sample to draw any hard conclusions, the die axis on 39 of 50 coins was between 11:00 to 1:00 (10) and 5:00 to 7:00 (29).  And, 9 of the 13 NGC slabbed coins were in those ranges. Again, not scientific, but do these numbers suggest a lose mint standard or target of 6:00 and to a lesser degree 12:00? On a quick search I didn’t find any work discussing die axis on the MAL issue. Anyone know of any work or study on this point?

Dear Ken and Board,

It is a little late here tonight to get deep into this topic again, but for what it is worth, I had done some pondering about the 12h/6h scenarios (on ancient coinage in general) a while back in a different post:

Hope you find it interesting enough to raise a skeptical eyebrow if nothing else!

Best regards,

There was a scientific project, including studies in die-axis of Roman Republican coins
Papers published here

Dies-axis seemed to be unimportant in Republican Coinage
