Elagabal provincial medallion
« on: July 13, 2005, 12:47:50 pm »
Since the original thread about my Elagabal provincial medallion has been deleted, I have to start a new one.

In the past thread it turned out nobody could find any reference for this coin (except from Curtis Clay: "A medallion from the same obverse die as yours, but rev. Sol mounting quadriga above reclining Earth, Aurora in clouds before him, same type as the Sept. Sev. aureus BM pl. 10.19, was in Waddell auction Dec. 1982, 42, "possibly unpublished"."). As Curtis and Patricia suggested, I wrote to the author of the upcoming monograph about Philippopolis coins but didn't get an answer yet, unfortunately.

However, I made an interesting discovery today while reading a book about Heracles on roman coins (Richard Stoll: Herakles auf Römischen Münzen, Trier 1999): on page 173/174, Nr. 130 my coin is shown!

Comment:
Kaiserzeit. Elagabal (218-222), AE-Medallion zu 12 Assaria, Philippopolis, Thrakien.
Vs: Bel. und gep. Büste n. r.
Rs: Herakles m. Keule u. Löwenskalp en face stehend, den Kopf n.l.
BMC; SNG Cop..
Privatbesitz; aus Auktion 56, Nr. 622, Numismatik Dr. Lanz, München.

This was a very surprising discovery to me. I immediately wrote an e-mail to Numismatik Lanz asking them about additional info, because Auktion 56 isn't available online, unfortunately (maybe one of the Forum members has this catalogue? That would be great!). As soon as I get an answer from Numismatik Lanz, I'll post it in here.

Curiously and impatiently waiting for info

Curtis has provided the descrition of my coin in Lanz Auktion 56:

Auktion 56, 13. Mai 1991. Nr. 622, plate 27: "BMC-, SNG Cop. - (vgl. 784: Rs. same die). Mionnet 358 (Frs. 120). 33,06g. Very rare. Green patina. Flan crack. Almoust Very Fine." Estimate: DM 500.

I'm looking forward to hear from Numismatik Lanz themselves, maybe they have some additional info.

Regards
Lars

Lanz refered to Mionnet 358 of which I now finally got a copy:

Elagabalus

258. AYT. K. M. AYPHL. ANTWNEINOC. CEB.
AE.12.-R6.-F.o.-120 fr.

I do not know what rarity scale Mionnet was using, but just below of the Elagabal medallion, he mentiones a Marinus coin (of which, as far as I now, only a few specimens are known) and gives it an R6. and estimates it at 120 fr. as well.

Lars

PS: yes I know I made mistakes copying the French description (due to my console, which does not know all French letters).
