Vespian AR Tetradrachm
« on: September 14, 2019, 11:57:02 am »
Hello,

Im new to the boards and have spent a couple years picking up random coins. Heres one of my favorites. Supposedly a year 1 AR tetradrachm, want to see what the pros think. Was found in Desert around Dubai. A bit worn on rev, 24mm and 11.39g purchased from AIA dealer. There are a few with this design having trouble pinpointing which is mine. Thank you all in advance im excited to take learning to a new level :)

According to Emmett there is year 1, 2 and 3 for this type (all three Emmett 205), but with this obverse legend only year 2 and 3 .

For me it looks like LB, year 2 , not year 3:

LB: [AV]TOK KAIΣ ΣEBA OV[EΣΠAΣIANOV]

also RPC list no year one for this legend

2 does look pretty close but i think my nose shape is different? Looks like i only have dots in my upper wings as well. Very cool never noticed the LB before thank you very much!

These Alexandrian tetradrachms are low-grade billon by the mid-first century AD.  The Syrian tetradrachms from the same era are better silver, but still somewhat debased.
