Fantastically Rare Vespasian Denarius

I'm very pleased to be able to share this recent acquisition: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-127698

In all the years I have been collecting Flavian silver I never thought I would see one of these offered at auction, let alone be able to obtain it! It's only March, but I can categorically say this will be my personal coin of the year. For a Flavian collector it doesn't get much better than this!

Congratulations David.  I can imagine the anticipation leading up to the auction!

Tremendous acquisition, well done.  When a rarity like this comes on the market, the nerves during the final 10 seconds are excruciating!

I will admit to an attempt for this one, but I brought a pea shooter to a gunfight. (And someone brought their gatling gun!)  :'(

Congrats,

Nemo

I was indeed quite nervous about this auction. The last few minutes were very nerve-racking. Sorry Nemo, but I had to have it!

I couldn't imagine a better home for this one!  It's appreciated that you go through the trouble to write great descriptions and post your rarities for us all to enjoy.

Wow David. Just a stunning acquisition. I know the feeling of waiting for an auction to end. It can be quite nerve wracking.

Like when you're the high bidder at $50 with 10 seconds to go...then you lose it when it jumps to $500 in the last second. ;D

Nice!

Not being familiar with the Flavian series, I especially appreciate the description which helps me understand the significance of the coin.  What fun!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments! I was really excited about receiving this coin and had a great deal of fun researching it. I'm glad both the coin and the write-up are appreciated.

Nemo, that's very gracious and kind of you. At least if another comes up at auction you won't have me to deal with. ;)

If anyone has the corresponding Octavian denarius please post it here. It would make a nice comparison piece and illustrate just how similar the two types are.

Since acquiring this type for Vespasian, I've become very interested in the corresponding quadriga/Victory denarius struck for Octavian. Again, I would love to see any examples Forvm members may have of the type. Vespasian, in part, was legitimising his rule by associating himself with these types from the past.
