Diocletian antoninian, with running IOVI rev
« on: May 31, 2003, 11:16:00 pm »
Hi all,
I know there's no pic here, it's 5 a.m. and I've just finished another 3 hours looking for this coin, so please have pity. (The birds are tweeting here and I'm going to bed as soon as I've written this)
Its an antoninian, the legend of the obverse begins with IMP DIOCLETIAN.. Radiate bust right.
The reverse legend begins with IOVI C and shows Jupiter running to the left, his right leg is much further forward towards the left of the coin, than the right (a bit like kids start a race), so I wouldn't say he is standing, more like striding.

The first I of IOVI is quite high up, almost at knee height.

There is an eagle at his feet towards the bottom left of the coin. Its body is to the left but it's head to the right, (about to peck Jupiter on the knee, if he doesn't look where he's going!)

There is something held up in Jupiter's left hand (Victory? Palm branch?) and something behind him, it could be a cloak flying outwards, or he may be holding a club behind him.
Oooh  :o I just noticed he's naked from, ahem, at least from the waist down.
The mint mark seems to be XXI? where the ? seems to be a rounded letter such as D, B or similar.

Does this ring a bell with anyone ?
Good night, all !
My gawd, it's daylight.. Better go before I turn into a modius..

Mornin' all
No, it's not any of those in the links.
[2 lines removed for clarity]
I'm going to try to scan the reverse at least but it's still a bit grotty.

Waiiiit a minute  :D - the scanner is better than my eyes -
He's looking to the right and is about the throw the thunderbolt at someone ! Its a "hurling".. Wow ! Never had one of these before. So that's some more info - and the pic of the reverse is below.

Could it be IOVOFVLGERATO it is one of the few that I find with Jupiter in motion and not standing.

Van Meter describes a IOVI VLCERATORI which is inline with the obverse legend
it shows Jupiter standing left hurling a thunderbolt unfortunately I can't find a picture anywhere online.
Man's mind stretched by a new idea never goes back to its original dimension.

Many thanks, I loaned my Van Meter to a friend and only got it back an hour ago and didn't have time to look in that yet.
Thanks for the tip...
Yes, that must be the one. VM29A though it says
IOVI P VLCERATORI (Jupiter the Pulcerator (?). Like Robert B says, we should call it a ray gun, LOL
Thanks all, I can go to bed early tonight (i.e. 4 a.m.)

PS All:
RIC says the legend is FVLGERATORI and not as Van Meter writes PVLCERATORI.
It's apparently RIC 168.
Shame, Jupiter the Pulcerator sounds better than Jupiter the Fulgerator :-)
