New numismatic area of interest
« on: April 23, 2011, 04:11:28 pm »
I have recently become interested in the coinage of the Sabeans and Himyarites.  I have SNG ANS 6 so I can read the scripts from the table given.  I don't know much about the the Sabeans and Himyarites, so does anyone know anything about their coinage? Any tips?

I am excited to find out more new things about this interesting area of coinage.

Sorry, I know nothing about the series.  But I did spot a new (but pricey) ANS book that includes, among a number of cultures, Sabaean and Himyarite:

Best wishes with your new collecting focus.

I also have started to investigate this period of coinage and i am awaiting my local library to obtain a copy of Stuart Munro Hay, "Coinage of Arabia Felix", which i understand covers this period of coinage.  This book is available but like most numismatic references quite expensive.

I bought three as a group at my local coin fair, mainly because i had never seen them before, just like to be different, buy the coins before the book  ;D

Thanks for the replies,

I have been thinking of adding a section on my website reviewing the coinage of Arabia Felix.  I have covered the coinage of Judaea, Nabataea and Judaea Capta Roman issues.  I find Levantine and Semitic coinage the most interesting.

I would think SNG ANS is the cheapest reference for this enigmatic group of coinage.

I didn't have much time to work on my site, but here's what I have on my website about this so far: http://judaea.chimehost.net/main/arabia.php

I have compiled a page with as many monograms as I could find, here: judaea.chimehost.net/main/himymono.pdf.
Has a comprehensive list of these monograms ever been compiled?
