Byzantine Seal of John, ordinarios?
« on: January 21, 2024, 09:09:24 am »
I just acquired an interesting Byzantine seal and additional item for my collection of seals of Ioannes.  It measures 20.97 mm and weighs 7.84 g.

It appears to have a cruciform monogram solving: Ἰωάννου in a wreath border on the obverse and  ora iny in two lines within a wreath border on the obverse.   It appears to be the same seal as BZS.1977.34.86 un the Dumbarton Oaks collection.  The curators solved its as Iωάννου ordinariu = (Seal of) John, ordinarios.   Is the attribution correct? and, if so, what was an I believe that it could be an “overseer (who keeps order);” “(military) centurion of the first cohort;” or “a judge or bishop having regular jurisdiction.”  What do you think?

Congrats on finding the parallel. Technically, it says 'ordinou', but ordinus doesn't make much sense, as a name nor as an office, so I'd say ordinarius would hold as an interpretation. Never seen it before, must be rare or unique.
