Epeiros hemidrachm known?
« on: December 16, 2023, 05:00:14 pm »
Hi everyone

I would like to submit you this coin, silver 14mm dia for 1,42gr.

The legend ΑΠΕΙ ΡΩΤΑΝ takes us to the antic region of Epeiros but looking for coins from that area, I can't find any similar specimen.

The bull seems to be a common representation of that region but not on both sides. Here we have got a bull face with a curious shape below it...

It could be from the epiriote league or from an Epiriote city.

Since I could not find a reference, I question the authenticity. The bull head is a little curious but why not...

I would really appreciate your opinion on this
Thanks a lot
Vincent

Modern forgery in my opinion—the bull head doesn’t look ancient at all.

Caprara forgery number 85, reverse die exists in combination with many different obverse dies.
If you ever think about selling you can consider me as being interested (pm me here), I collect Caprara forgeris and pay fair prices.
