A Left-Facing Septimius Severus / Cista Mystica from Nicaea
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:46:08 pm »

As a left-hander I'm always happy to see a mint do something different and display a left profile occasionally; since it's such an unusual step at most mints, it is often hard even to guess why it happens at all.  Here's a left-facing AE 15, 2.14 g, Septimius Severus laur. hd. l. (SEOUHROS AYGO (HR in ligature) / Serpent exiting cista mystica l., NIKAIEWN, reverse also apparently unpublished for Sept. Severus, but in a traditional size, with a standard cista mystica reverse; cf. RG 454.443 *, same reverse, Caracalla.

    * http://people.virginia.edu/~jdk3t/RG/RG1-3061.html / http://people.virginia.edu/~jdk3t/RG/RG1-3193.html ; the description of RG 454.442 wrongly labels an altar cista mystica.  There is another (prize-urn) issue with the same left-facing Septimius Severus obverse:

Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

AE 14, GETAS KAISAR, same reverse (different die), and apparently also unpublished with draped Geta and this obverse legend:
Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

Although from different dies, an example of the published Geta version of this cista mystica issue, RG 463.509 (Pl. lxxx.18) *, Bare head r., P SEPTI GETAS KAI:
