Pisidia, Antioch/Philip I/River God
« on: July 09, 2014, 06:14:08 pm »

Collecting provincials of Philip I is a bit outside my interest area, except when I find one that is interesting - in that it is not the standard, standards reverse type that plagues the city's coinage after Gordian III. This one a nice AE25 of Philip I depicting a reclining River God Anthios, much in the form and fashion of the Phrygian example depicting Gallos that I posted of GIII last night.

2014.175.1 Pisidia Antioch

Philip I, AE25; 11.17 g; 6h

Obverse: IMP C M IVL PHILIPPVS AV (or AVG); Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Reverse: ANTHIO; in exergue in two lines: ANTIOCHI/COL; River God, Anthios, reclining left; holds cornucopia in right hand; left elbow resting on overturned urn from which water flows; reed behind.
Ref: cf Krzyzanowska plate 29, 8 [for reverse die; new Obverse die]; SNG von Aulock 4971;
