a Clodius Albinus Augustus as
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:50:34 pm »

Hi, I've just receive a new coin. I Think it's a only one of three known examples of Albinus as Augustus copper coin. It seem to be unique and unpublished. I'd like to know if you know other as that the BMC one and the LANZ 14 n°265. The obverse die is the same as the BMC one with another reverse.

     Nice find!
Giard's description of the Lanz coin needs correction, in two regards.
He says it is from a different obv. die than the BM coin, but in fact it appears to be the same obv. die, as the Lanz catalogue correctly states.
Second, Giard says the Lanz coin has an "uncertain reverse type", when in fact it is a "Victory advancing right" type, as on your coin!
I am uncertain whether the rev. die of the Lanz coin is the same as that of your coin, or different; it is corroded and only a few details can be made out in the image.  Lanz reports that this coin was found at Carnuntum.
The BM has a second specimen of the FORT. RED. As of Albinus Augustus, from the same dies as the first, found at Housesteads and presented to the museum in 1960:  see the note to BM 622 in the second edition of BMC V.

Hey Curtis, if I didn't know that you're American your post would make me rather sure you would have to be an Englishman... "Nice find" is British understatement at its best!

Consider, however, that I collect for the BM, so "we" have already got two of them, though with the other rev. type!
But OK, I admit, I'm envious and want that second type too!

As a collector, I see it the other way: it's the second, and best, Clodius Albinus Augustus bronze coin outside the BM! :o

A friend of mine, Blake Davis (he gave me permission to post his name and coin pictures) recently got this Clodius Albinus Augustus As in a group lot!  What an amazing thing to happen!

Hi,

Fantastic coins  :o The origin was not yet mensioned, @Frederic please allow me to translate a small part of your great website, it sais,

Translated: as Clodius required some place to strike his coins as Augustus, he re-opened the coinhouse in Lyons (Lugdunum) which mainly struck Denarii and some gold. Currently, we know of 4 bronze pieces mensioning the title AVG that were struck in Lyon. These pieces are regarded as As and they do not carry the SC-legend, as Clodius could not create a second senate outside Rome !
