Strange colors on a "Vespasian AE Dupondius"
« on: January 20, 2008, 05:05:08 am »
I am really interesting in learning how to check if a coin is a fake or not.
In this example, I see some strange colors and holes, but I do not know
if these are the result of oxidation, tooling and wear or to a fake process.

13.33  gr
27.8   mm
3.8    mm thickness

There are green and purple parts. How can you explain these colors ?
In the purple part, we can see the hand with and without the upper layer
of the coin. Is it the patina or the deposition layer of a fake process ?

Is it a genuine or a fake ?

How can you explain these signs ?

All I see is a coin with a large amount of corrosion.  There are some shadows on the coin from the light source, but I can't see any obvious fills, tooling, or repatination on this coin.
