Good evening all! Hope you had a fine weekend. I have a very special coin to show today - an as of Commodus:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=187551The coin itself is very attractive, with a fine portrait and a beautiful patina. It's also an extremely rare type, not listed in RIC, and carries an interesting collection provenance to the Jeff Clark VOTA Collection.
But the best part I found when I looked up the type in my copy of David R. Sear's
Roman Coins and Their Values, and saw this very coin pictured on page 411!
Later I discovered that the coin had been auctioned by Numismatic Fine Arts in their Dec. 10, 1980 auction, from which Sear probably used it for his reference work.
Needless to say, I'm thrilled to have discovered this incredible provenance, and to be able to own an illustrated plate coin published in such a popular and well-known reference catalog!
