An interesting coin, and certainly authentic in my opinion.
As
Martin notes, the
obverse die seems to be the same as that of the NAC 59 coin that he found, lot 1990, where the
reverse type is
Spes advancing left, with the same
reverse legend TR POT -
COS III S - C.
Pekka K points out that the
type of
Juno seated left, holding Three
Graces in right hand and
transverse scepter in left, occurs with
rev. legend IVNO S C on
asses of
Faustina II struck late in the reign of
Antoninus Pius, her
obverse legend being
FAVSTINA AVG
PII AVG FIL or
FAVSTINA
AVGVSTA AVG
PII F.
On these
asses a
peacock is usually shown on the left, before
Juno's legs.
On the
Spanish auction coin of
Antoninus Pius that
Martin has asked about, the
Juno seated
rev. type is the same, but the
legend is
TR POT COS III (140-144 AD), the
peacock is behind rather before
Juno, and the
obverse bust is laureate, draped, seen from
side,
legend ANTONINVS - AVG
PIVS P P.
Two other comparable
asses:
1.
Strack 890, pl. XI, in Bologna,
obv. Head laureate right, ANTONINVS - AVG
PIVS P P,
rev. peacock either on left or omitted (coin is corroded), definitely not on right.
2.
Rauch, Summer 2009, lot 890, from the same
obv. die as the Bologna coin illustrated by
Strack, on
reverse peacock on left.
