Roman Republic Questionable M. Porcius Laeca Denarius
« on: March 19, 2024, 09:18:35 am »
Roman Republican Fake Coin, modern fake, ancient fake ???

The coin "just does not look" like another M. Porcius Laeca that I have.

The coin is underweight at 3.27 grams, but it is about 18 mm.

There is a break in the "E" on the Obv, and the Reverse has the "O" in Roma connected to the line above it in an odd way.

Also the legs of the horses seem too thin?

The edge has some of the normal flan brakes, but it seems too smooth and round.  Maybe it was polished??  Hidden casting lines?

Thin legs? They do not seem unusual to me. The other things you describe are due to die wear. It could be cast from a genuine coin, but I believe the things you describe are normal. More likely genuine, but I cannot authenticate it from photos.

A terrible cast fake, very soapy, closed edge crack too smooth edge and identical casting twins known.
Another one sold by a reputable auction house
