Probably a bone bead.  These were used for various things but probably for a helmet strap.  The two leather laces go through the bead and then each gets knotted on the end so it doesn't slip through.  The bead can then be raised or lowered to hold the check guards in place.

Definitely a bead of some sort.

Personally I would be very wary of assigning a role as specialized as "helmet strap" unless documented parallels are known.
