ID for box-shaped Roman artifact, please!
« on: January 12, 2024, 04:27:34 pm »
Ave!

It is 20mm square and 9mm thick. No weight as it's still full of mud/dirt. LOL!

As seen on the top, bands of inset enamel/glass. The bottom has two holes.

3rd photo - These two sides have no holes, but there is gap between the top and the base. When I first saw that, I thought, Cool, a tiny box with a removable lid.

NOT! Other than that single gap, the top and bottom are still firmly connected together.

4th photo - Each of these sides have a hole.

Have any you ever seen anything like this? Any thoughts as to its use or purpose? LMK!

Best to all,

Kevin

Hi, Kevin.  Beautiful find!  I googled "Square Roman Seal Box" and came up with a couple of photos in articles of similar objects.  Check these out:

Good luck!  Jimi

P.S.  I see two more plugged up holes on the bottom.

Nice piece.  These come in different shapes.  Here's mine:

Once cleaned you might find it is fused together.

Ave!

Seal box for sure! Now cleaned.

Note in the final photo of the sides, the two hinges are still in place but, as Shawn mentioned, they are fused
and I dare not try to open it any further.

Thanks guys!

Kevin
