Another sharp and extremely rare Domitian denarius
« on: October 19, 2016, 10:34:12 am »
Hello everyone.

Today I received this little gem: it's a very rare variety with GERMAN instead of the usual shorter GERM on obverse legend.

The coin itself has still some deposits that I personally like and I'm not willing to remove at the moment.

The coin is from a different pair of dies than the RIC example; indeed RIC plate is not that clear, luckily the actual coin is in the Jirky Muona gallery where I checked it.

Kind regards

Alberto

Terrific catch Alberto. The reverse is wonderful. Congratulations on another great addition to your collection.

It's a great coin.  I think those deposits will come off quite easily but they don't detract at all from the wonderful strike.

What a terrific coin!

If it were mine I'd remove the deposits (at least those on the portrait).

Unusual figure of Minerva and oddly detailed portrait of Domitian, at least in the photo. Looks imitative almost or perhaps a fourre?

Barry,

many thanks for your note.

I would exclude a fouree.

As for the style it looks within the range to me, yet of course you are much more experienced than me.

Attaching seller's picture.

Kind regards

Alberto
