republican denarius - is it a hybrid?
« on: May 17, 2017, 08:25:33 am »
Hi!

Could you please help with attribution of this republican denarius - I was told that this could be a hybrid - is it true?

Sorry, I dont have scales with me - I will be able to let know the weight only late in the evening.

Thank you for your time!

Z.

Yes, looks like M.Cato obverse (Cra 343) with
C. Serveili M.F. reverse (Cra 239/1).

Pekka, thank you very much!

For the record: 18x19mm - 2,8g - 3h

I only wonder is this hybrid recorded by Crawford or elsewhere?

At that low weight doubtless an ancient counterfeit, maybe plated.

So it would not have been included in standard catalogues of official coins, unless for the purpose of refuting someone else who had considered such a coin official.
