Very Large Constantius II Fel Temp mint mark
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:45:05 pm »
This is the largest Constantius II Fel Temp I've seen at 23mm and 6.37g.  Is the mint mark PNMA? I can't find this one on Helvetica's spreadsheet so I'm guessing that I am reading the mint wrong.

Any ideas?

It looks like SMNA, but the initial S is upside down/backwards - maybe this is imitative or
otherwise a mint error?

So the mint is Nicomedia, prefixed with SM ('sacra moneta'), officina A.

Backwards S, yes, the one way I didn't try it.

How about the weight. Out of all my Fel Temps this is by far the heaviest.

I don't know about the weight, but it may not be abnormal for an early issue - a quick google search turned up these pages:

Fel Temp Official Issues: http://dougsmith.ancients.info/ftr.html

Fel Temp Imitations: http://esty.ancients.info/imit/imitFTR.html

(maybe the authors can chime in with more information?)

And here the FEL TEMP fallen horseman collection of Helvetica:

She would be very interested in this coin, I presume, since I could not find it on her page.

There are a huge amount of contemporary (aka barbaric) copies of the Fel Temp Coinage.  There is in fact an entire Britich Archaeological Report on them entitled "Copies of the Fel Temp Reparatio coinage in Britain : a study of their chronology and archaeological significance including gazetteers of hoards and site finds".

The backwards S makes this an excellent candidate.  That might explain why the weight is off - less strick tolerances.
