Seleucia Calycadnum - Emperror help
« on: June 19, 2014, 05:28:57 am »
Hi, got my hands on this nice coin. Very large indeed, AE34 and weighting ~ 20g. I am still questioning the emperror. Seems most probably Trebonianus Gallus but it could be a Gordian or a young Philip or even a Valerian. I cannot really read the legend but seems to be something as AVK  :Greek_Gamma:AI OV... thus leading to Trebonianus.
Can anyone confirm? what is your verdict?
Thanks
Adax

Hi Adax,

I think you are right with Trebonianus, this one could be a match:

And this one has the same countermark:

Hi, Great thanks for the confirmation. I did not notice the countermark. Thanks for that. Let's be it, Trebonianus Gallus. More than perfect. My second coin for this emperror, first one being a small coin from Attaleia in Pamphylia, but that one is simply massive.
Cheers

Hi adx,

Does this coin have bronze disease? What is that green stuff on the surface?

I don't think it's bd on the reverse, just residue, should be hard and safe by the look. Only spot I would check is at 10 o'clock on the obverse, if it's under the surface and powdery it's bd.

I agree completely. BD is completely different. It is a much lighter colour and eats into the coin. This is on top of the coin. If it covered the coin evenly, you would call it a nice green patina.

Hello, please see below a closer scan of the Rvs with the green "crust". I am not a specialist of BD although I already lost one coin to it !
Hope not that one....

Hi Adax,

as I said, it's definitely no bd on the rev., the only spot where I would check is on the obverse in the legend: AY K ΓΑΙ OΥΑΙ ΤΡΕΒΩ ΓΑΛΛΟC
