2 interesting coins from Nikopolis out of a junk box
« on: August 23, 2009, 02:55:37 pm »
Hi!

These two small coins I got yesterday from a junk box. I think both are rare.

(1) Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
      AE 17, 2.82g
      obv. AV KL - CEVHROC
              Bust, laureate, r.
     rev. NIKOPOLITWN PROC I
Laurel-wreath, circle between upper ends, within six-pointed star with dots at the tips.
ref. not in AMNG; Varbanov (engl.) 2485 (PC, unpublished)
rare, F+/about VF, dark-green glossy patina

(2) Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
     AE 19, 2.56g
obv. AV KAI CE - CEVHROC
Bust, draped and cuirassed(?), laureate, r.
     rev. NIKOPOLIT. - PROC ICTRO
Apollo, nude, except chlamys over l. shoulder, stg. l., holding bow in l. arm and patera in extended r. hand
ref. not in AMNG; not in Varbanov (engl.)
Both references list no small coin with Apollo holding bow and patera. So this coin possibly is unpublished. BTW I have
another coin of this type in my collection in a worse state.
very rare, F+/about VF, dark-green patina with earthen incrustations

Anyone who know this coin or can give me a reference?

Best regards

No new references for that Apollo, but it is intriguing -- a curious convergence of traits, and a nice coin to have.  Perhaps loosely connected with this large-module coin of Macrinus, Varbarnov (E) 3435, where A.'s holding a branch not a patera:
