VICTORIA AVGGG strange exergue line
« on: February 28, 2024, 04:09:27 am »
This small AE4 bronze coin with a VICTORIA AVGGG reverse type seems to have the exergue in a very strange place. Because of this placement, it seems the mint mark says IAAV (which is obviously just part of the reverse legend). Does anyone know other examples of a mistake like this? It seems like a contemporary imitation but unfortunately there is very little literature on the 'barbaric' types.

Why do you think that the exergual line is "in a very strange place"? Just turn the picture. To be honest, I clearly see only this line and AVVA in exergue. The rest is like cloud. One can imagine nearly everything...

Because the exergue is located on the right side of the body of victoria and includes the IAAV part of the VICTORIA AVGGG inscription, in the place where you would expect the exergue below the victory type there is nothing to be seen. I could turn the picture as you suggest but then the victory type does not come out the right way. Moreover, there is no mint mark AVVA.

It's just Vicky's wing.  Mintmark is under some corrosion.

Good point! Now I see: it's obviously a wing, not an exergual line. What can do a suggestion...
