Mesembrian Diobols on Ebay
« on: June 08, 2004, 11:41:18 pm »
After the whole black sea horde fiasco, is it safe today to buy Mesembrian Diobols or are most of them considered to be fakes?  They are common enough on eBay but are they real?  I really think that they are one of the most desirable Greeks.  I asked a vendor at the local coin show about this type of coin and he said that he considers nearly all available today to be modern fakes.

Anyone have any opinions or experience?
Thanks :)

I bought one, at a coin show and it turned out to be fake.  (Dealer offered my money back; I decided to keep it to remind myself to always do the research before buying the coins.)

Many of the original false dies were published in The Celator in 1989.  There are probably new false dies; I studied the Black Sea forgeries of Apollonia diobols and new varieties continue to surface.

Like you I hope to get a real one someday.  I would be nervous to buy one except in a top-level European glossy-catalog auction, or from a dealer with an unlimited return policy (like FORVM), after budgeting the price of Sear certification into the coin.
