Lycian League drachm of Augustus
« on: August 07, 2023, 02:55:29 pm »
I acquired this Lycian League drachm earlier this year. 19mm, 3.64g, 12h. Two searches, with 'Lycian League' and also 'Augustus', did not turn up any coins of this type in the Fake Reports.

This coin of mine is from an obverse die very close to Troxell's 122.3, but I can't say it is the same die.

I don't have a specific concern regarding the coin, but I would like to see what others think about it.

Hi KD,

Here is my example:

Mine is a pedigreed coin from the Lindgren collection. I purchased it from Mr. Lindgren before he passed away.

In the days since I posted my coin here, there has not been any information (publicly posted here, or privately communicated to me) that would indicate the coin is anything but a genuine old example.

Thanks for the information and URL, Klaus.

I think Superior gave the coin away. This was in their E-Auction I, so maybe they are a new incarnation of an old name and didn't have much participation at the start of the venture?

Update:
https://www.numisforums.com/topic/1540-superior-galleries-e-auction-i-and-e-auction-ii-possibly-wait-to-pay-first/

I can understand why bids might have been depressed for this new startup.
From a post on Page 2 of the linked thread:

"Based on contact info at biddr.com, the "New York Office" is shared office space in lower Manhattan that offers mailbox service: https://www.thefarmsoho.com/locations/soho/.

Superior Galleries LLC was registered in Wyoming on 9/13/2022, listing the same 447 Broadway address: https://www.bizapedia.com/wy/superior-galleries-llc.html.

The "Dubai Office" is located in a mall (souk) that boasts "7,000 shops and pavilions": https://www.soukalmarfa.ae/about/.

The listed telephone number includes a Dubai country code and according to the auction terms, lot viewing is offered only in Dubai.

The domain name "superior-galleries.com" was registered on 9/26/2022: https://www.whois.com/whois/superior-galleries.com."
