Romanus III Nomisma
« on: May 26, 2007, 02:11:47 pm »
I need an Byzantine expert to look at this Romanus Histamenon Nomisma. I have doubts as to its authenticity. I purchased it from a dealer that I feel is repitable, and should be able to return it if there a problem. The coin is 22mm, and weights 3.6g. The weight does worry me, but would like another opinoin. thanks

Le poids des monnaies en or byzantines est extrêmement régulier, quelle que soit la période.
Pour information le poids de mes 8 monnaies en or byzantines :
4,40 g - 4,48g - 4,48g - 4,43g - 4,39g - 4,42g - 4,42g - 4,38g
(L'histamenon de Romain III : 24mm/4,39g)

Sorry, I have no idea about Byzantines, but I see nothing wrong with the style; and if somebody made such a good fake, the easiest thing for him would be to take 4.4 and not 3.6 g of gold, wouldn't it?
Could this simply be a clipped coin?

I don't think the coin could have been clipped 0.8 grams.  That is around a fifth or a quarter of the weight of the coin.  It doesn't look like that much of the coin is gone.

Have a look at Alwin's post; you see the double circle of beads, and on the first coin, small parts of it and most outside it is gone. I think you might get the second coin to 3.6g if you cut off most that is outside the circle.

I really need someone to look at the design and weight and tell me whether it is modern or not before I return it to the dealer!
